Regional players in the livestock sector are set to showcase their expertise in a three-day trade forum in Nairobi, after the KCB Foundation partnered with industry stakeholders to facilitate the National Livestock Expo Exhibition.

The expo to be held on November 4 to 6 is expected to bring together local, regional and international breeders, livestock keepers, processors, marketers, industry regulators and policy makers, among others.

“We encourage different players in the livestock industry to take advantage of this opportunity to engage and evaluate promising investment opportunities,” said KCB Foundation board director Catherine Kimura.

The expo will aim at having a trade-oriented forum bringing together livestock keepers and value chain actors for business to business engagements and opening up investment opportunities through the exhibition platform where actors can showcase livestock products and services.

The foundation has partnered with Eastern Africa Farmers Association, AgriPro Focus, Kenya Livestock Producers Association and Kenya Livestock Marketing Council to facilitate the exhibition.

KCB Foundation has for the last two years pursued various initiatives in the livestock industry to help producers commercialise the sector and ensure they retain maximum value of their produce by owning the value chains.

“We have invested over Sh100 million to support the livestock sector in Kenya and with this expo, we hope to change the lives of Kenyans and Africans as a whole,” Ms Kimura said.

The livestock expo will also provide a platform for different actors in the pastoral value chains to explore a variety of opportunities for enhanced livestock marketing during drought crises.

She lamented that despite the growing demand for meat in both local and global markets, pastoralists, who are the main livestock keepers, have the highest incidence of poverty, economic insecurity and unemployment yet they produce over 70 per cent of the meat consumed.

The expo will cut across all extensive livestock value chains including meat, apiculture, hides and skins, camels, and other emerging value chains.

Livestock contributes up to 20 per cent of the GDP of individual countries in the Horn and Eastern Africa region and employs tens of millions of people.

In Kenya, agriculture is the mainstay of the Kenyan economy with the livestock sub-sector contributing about 12 per cent of GDP.
